Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary is fairly known as Jerusalem of Western Bohemia – at the same coffee houses were german speaking Maskilim playing cards and chess with the Eastern European Rebbes of Chassidic courts. On the streets you could easily meet Albert Einstein, chattng with the Bobover Rebbe.

Historical background
After Karlovy Vary was anexed by Nazi Germany with support of Italy, France and Great Britain, the local Synagogue was damaged during the November pogrom known as the Kristallnacht – untill those days the biggest Reichs Pogrom dated November 9th, 1938. It was just a beginning of what was to follow.

Where is local Jewish community's sanctuary?
The local Jewish Community's sanctuary takes place in the JCC nowadays.
Why is it called Karlovy Vary in particular?
The word "var" in Czech means boil. When king Charles the IV. was hunting a deer on local hills, the wounded animal fell down the river. Before Charles and his royal retinue reached the river, the deer was boiled. So he called the place Karlovy Vary. A bit of bubbe meise.
